About Accessibility Shield

Last updated: March 15, 2026

Accessibility Shield was founded with a singular mission: to make web accessibility affordable, transparent, and durable for every website owner—without predatory enterprise lock-ins or deceptive software.

We believe the web should be accessible to everyone, including the 1.3 billion people worldwide living with significant disabilities. At the same time, we believe small businesses, creators, indie founders, and ecommerce merchants should not be bankrupted by opportunistic legal demand letters or $1,000/year "AI overlay" subscriptions that fail to protect them.

The Problem We Set Out to Solve

Over the past five years, digital accessibility litigation under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has surged past 4,600 lawsuits annually.

Instead of helping small businesses become accessible, the compliance software industry responded with two deeply flawed approaches:

  1. Overpriced Enterprise Consulting: Traditional manual accessibility agencies charge between $3,500 and $10,000 for one-off static PDF audits that become obsolete the moment a merchant adds a new product or publishes a blog post.
  2. Deceptive "AI Overlays": Vendors sell 300KB+ JavaScript overlays for $490 to $1,200/year, promising that proprietary algorithms will magically rewrite HTML in real time. In reality, federal courts in New York, California, and Florida have repeatedly rejected overlays, and over 800 businesses actively running overlays were sued in a single year.

Small businesses were caught in an impossible squeeze: face a $25,000 settlement demand, or pay thousands of dollars every year for software that doesn't actually stop lawsuits.

Our Engineering & Ethical Philosophy

We built Accessibility Shield around three core principles:

1. Fix Code at the Source, Not With Visual Band-Aids

True web accessibility is an engineering and markup discipline. You cannot make a website accessible by slapping a JavaScript overlay on top of broken HTML. We run continuous automated audits using open standards like Axe-Core to flag exact contrast ratios, missing alt attributes, and unlabelled form controls with plain-English code recommendations.

2. Zero-Bloat, Privacy-First Assistive Personalization

We built an on-site assistive toolbar in pure vanilla TypeScript, compiled with esbuild, and strictly budgeted under 6.0 KB (currently ~5 KB minified, ~2 KB gzipped). It loads asynchronously, has zero third-party tracking scripts, does not collect personal data, and preserves your 100/100 Core Web Vitals.

3. Transparent, Accessible Pricing ($1/Month)

Compliance shouldn't be an enterprise luxury. By leveraging modern serverless infrastructure (Neon PostgreSQL and lightweight edge execution), we eliminated legacy corporate overhead. We provide continuous weekly audits, hosted statements, and on-site barrier feedback for just $1/month ($12 billed annually)—backed by a 14-day money-back guarantee.
